“The form that results from this explosion may characterize what Isabelle Stengers calls the meso-, a processural determination of meaning from the possibility of forms that result, or could result, from “connections of dissimilars.” Rather than focus on a narrative construction or on meaning, however, I am interested in these forms of relation as they result from cuts, gaps, holes or cracks, and the material that seeps through—sound, light, water. An incommensurate world accepts a heartbeat and echolocation as articulate. To go beyond representation is to perceive what falls beyond the spectrum of scientific measurability by illuminating gaps: the hertz level of sound, the waves beyond the spectrum of light, the shade beyond the gesture of the everyday. The interiors carved into the earth, pipelines and such. A nonrepresentational method offers that there is an entire ontological gap between what is seen and understood and what is actually felt and known. It argues that disclosure and discourse do not order the world so much as shapes and material forms. What is the shape of a thought, or an idea? What if this idea can only be expressed in sound, in a feeling, in color or frequency?”
